Analysis of the name Nasamon with as point of departure the explanation of Pliny the Elder who argued that the Nasamons were first called Mesammons (Mesammones) by the Greeks because they lived in the middle of the desert. Most of the author's hypotheses are based on popular resemblances, especially from the Berber. The analysis which seems most likely is that the name Nasamones/Mesammones is a formation with the Berber prefix ms- ("in relation to"). The translation "peoples in relation to Ammon" is linguistically correct. M.W.K.
