Locally, when referring to a butterfly, "we" say: iberbuli. Once, I had asked the question within a poetry topic, and one answered: we say "abelbelu" (in Taznaght if well remembered). Well, these are more than neighbouring.
So I assume here that Tabelbela is the same word, but in the other gender (fem.).

There might be some reason for which this land - now integered within Algeria - is so called Tabelbela (butterfly), this latter being still used in Tacelhite-speaking lands.

I think the meaning of Tabalbel(te) is an alteration taberberate which derives from teh verb IBERBER meaning Cover the face and the head.........specialy in this desertic place.
An ethnic group named BANBARA used to be living in the region for hundreds years........ comapre TBLBL and IBRBR and BNBR........

Idir, that first assumption I issued can be quickly rejected by the interpretation of the atypical form of the toponym (gender).

Whilst you have been provided with other tracks to explore, I would add one which is more relevant than the one I had stated previously.

There is a small water reservoir nearby my town, available for fishing (no bathing). It's been 3 years now since the local fishers' association has taken the piss off because of a new enemy: a migrating heron, which found there an open-food space.
That leads me to look back for the translation of heron in our language. Sometimes, that bird is surprisingly confused with Aswu, which is the cicania (laying on top of timzgida). But the name of the generic heron is "ablbl", or "abelbel" or whichever transcription better to anyone.

I immediately thought about that topic: given that the interested area is linked with the Draa, which is known for being still a huge bird paradise, I'd formulate a new proposal, as following.

Tabelbela was (or has been) an area abundantly populated with migrating herons, these latter having an accurate migrating pattern to this land that convinced the people to name the place after them.

Back to my machine, I can try to seek for further details, notably in regards of the geographical and ecological habitat.

Lameen Souag is now in Tabelbela and writes the following on his Blog:

I've gotten a clearer idea of the linguistic situation here. Apart from Kwarandjie, which, as I've said, is the main language of three of the four villages (and used to be the lingua franca of the oasis), and of course Arabic, there are a few families here (in Ifrenyu and el-Karti) speaking Tamazight - specifically, the dialects of the Ayt Khebbach and Ayt Atta tribes of southern Morocco. They seem to have traditionally been nomads in the general vicinity who settled down here in the seventies or so...
