Ahul,
je me suis déja demandé plusieurs fois d'où provenait le nom de Tanger (qui doit être surement amazigh). D'aucuns disent que cela vient de Tingis qui signifierait bla bla bla, etc. Jamais je n'ai trouvé de version définitive ou assez convaincante! Mais si on regarde de près le mot en darija, (Tanja), on voit que la forme est plus proche de notre parler : cela me rappelle des noms de villes touaregues au Niger qui commencent toutes par le préfixe "tin".
Voilà, c'était une réflexion qui pourrait donner matière à faire avancer ce débat.

M.Shafiq gave his version saying that the meaning of Tanger - Tanja [darija] is still known by it inhabitants when they sing about their city; ...Tanja al-3alya...
(this region used to be inhabited by Ghumara berbers of the Masmuda branche, see ibn khaldun)

I want to give a quote from a book:

Tanja:

Named 'tingis' by the Phoenicians, its original name is 'Tingi', a word derived from Tamazight, meaning 'the one where water flows'.
Worth mentioning here is the fact that there exists in Tunisia a river that flows into the Benzert Lake called 'Tinja'. The geoname is also recorded as 'Tingue' in a number of Latin lexicons. It may mean a 'headland' or 'cliff', given that 'igi' stands for a 'precipe' in Tamazight. This is attsted by the fact that Tanger does overlook two seas and a strait.

thanks for your answer. It is probably tru that, as u say, it would come from "cliff" since cliffs are very high on the Atlantic side of the harbour of the city. But I didn't know the word "igi". Is it not rather "iji" ? Since then "tin - iji" would make sens...

it isn't what I sayd but a theory of theauthor, well 'igi' in the theory of Shafiq is the word used in Tashelhiyt:
iggi: en haut de, le haut, partie supérieure [www.tifawin.com]

it means the same as the people of Tanje say in darija: Tanja al-3alya

j<>g for example agd'id' - ajd'id' etc..
Grsif the city is written in arabic as jarsif
