We are happy to announce that from 1-9-2006 onward the Faculty of Arts of Leiden University will offer a one-year special track in Berber (Amazigh) Languages and Linguistics in the framework of the one-year MA African Linguistics.
Beneath you find a short description of the programme:
First term:
Introduction to Berber linguistics (10 ECTS)
Introduction to Berber studies (5 ECTS)
First Berber language (*) (5 ECTS)
Second Berber language (*) or Linguistic Fieldwork (5 ECTS)
Language, Culture and Cognition (5 ECTS)
Second term:
Samples of Linguistic Structures of African Languages (10 ECTS)
Master's Thesis (20 ECTS)
(*) The Berber languages for which introductory courses are offered are: Tashelhiyt (Morocco, Prof. H.J. Stroomer), Tarifiyt (Morocco, Dr. M. Kossmann), and Tuareg (Dr. M. Kossmann). Courses for other variants of Berber may also be organised.
In principle, the language of instruction is English. The courses that are specific to this track can, if necessary, be given in French. This option is not available for courses aimed at a wider public (Language, Culture, and Cognition; Samples of Linguistic Structures). The thesis may be written in English or in French.
Admission requirement
In principle, students with a BA in linguistics or with a BA in a specific language area (with reasonable knowledge of linguistics) are admitted without further requirements. Students with a different background will be assessed individually and may be asked to do an additional exam.
