“Amazigh involvement in mountain tourism in Morocco”
Tamsmount al-Akhawayn will be hosting a workshop addressing the above-mentioned topic.

For over twenty-five years now, for better or worse, Morocco’s mountain ranges have been targeted by multi-activity tourism. This includes adventure trekking, pony trekking, combined off-road and walking excursions, rock-climbing, skiing, snow-shoeing, canyoning and other white-water sports. While the phenomenon is developing dramatically, with an estimated 100,000 trekkers per year, fall-out from such activity has not necessarily been profitable to the local inhabitants. This work-shop accordingly wishes to invite participants, Moroccan and/or foreign, who are involved in tour organization, guest-house management, human geography, environmental issues, and related fields, or who have recent personal knowledge of the Atlas Mountains, for a timely debate on this subject.

The aim is to promote discussion on the on-going situation, identify where problems lie and suggest appropriate remedial strategies, bearing in mind the interests of the local Amazigh population, who are chiefly concerned by these various activities.

The workshop will be held at Al-Akhawayn University-in-Ifrane (AUI), on Tuesday, April 17, 2007. Papers will be read in Arabic, English or French. We are looking forward to welcoming you here.
